What is an Oral Health Therapist?

OHT Sibel Explains…

By Sibel Serce

An Oral Health Therapist (OHT) is a dental practitioner who is able to provide oral health care to both children and adults and is a combination of both a therapist and hygienist. An OHT works alongside a dentist to give the best care to patients and provide the most suitable treatment within their scope of practice.

What does an OHT do?

An Oral Health Therapist provides essential dental treatment to patients of all ages, making certain that all patients receive the most suitable care individualised to their needs. This may include providing necessary routine check ups, detecting and diagnosing disease of the gums and dental decay, as well as providing patient education regarding ways to optimise their oral health.

What type of treatment does an OHT provide?

OHTs can provide an array of dental treatment, from regular routine check ups to fillings and other potential preventive needs that a patient may require. Having an adult scope extension allows oral health therapists to provide further in depth care to adult patients, enabling us to help dentists share the workload!

Treatment Provided to Children:

  • Routine dental check-ups and cleans
  • Fissure sealants
  • Fillings
  • Extractions of baby teeth

Benefits of Having an OHT as Part of the Dental Team

Having OHTs included in the dental team, allows for things to run smoothly and quickly in the practice. By aiding the dentist in provision of treatment, it allows for us to better the way in which appointments flow and reduce the risk of running overtime. In doing so, we can help give patients the most effective treatment and support necessary to better their experience.
